MPs will still get their £7600 rise

Says Jane Edwards.

Cameron, Milliband and Clegg are putting on a great show of why their sections of the Lib-Lab-Con party will not permit its MPs to imitate Oliver Twist this Christmas and ask for more. Of course, Cameron and Clegg in particular are not exactly down on their uppers and earn plenty of money from their City interests – and Milliband is not short of a few extras. But even for those MPs who have no outside earnings – and they can be counted on one hand – £66,396 is not exactly an impoverished salary.

Outside of Parliament, the City and wherever other UK based international corporations are based, the ordinary British people are undergoing a belt-tightening regime. Nurses and other members of our NHS staff are kept to a 1 per cent rise, as are all other public sector workers. The Government is also cutting benefits for vulnerable families (not just free-loading immigrants) Contrast this with the 11.3 per cent rise that the MPs are determined to get, whether the current ballyhoo with the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA)means they will get their money in May 2015 or a few months after the general election that year..

The performing dogs that pass for our MPs today – well most of them – use our taxes to pay for daily meals, travel, expenses for second homes and duck ponds etc. What is more, remember that the meals they get in the House of Commons, which are not exactly Tesco bangers and mash, are subsidised by us as is the booze they can knock back in the bar.

I would say that when the dust settles the IPSA should show its true ‘independence’ and work out a reasonable rise which would then cover all present expenses with the possible exclusion of overnight payment for those MPs representing constituencies more than 100 miles from Westminster.

  1. They argue that they are poorly paid compared to the private sector. Not many of those career politicians have ever done any real work outside of jobs for the boys and family connections. They are just tax leeches that do not stand up for the ‘real’ British people and are hell-bent on overseeing the destruction of our nation.

  2. Having difficulty with your last paragraph. Er… why should the IPSA “work out a reasonable rise”? These people should be told that they are getting NOTHING. If they don’t like it, then they can do what everyone else gets told in the circumstances; Get another job! There is never a shortage of greedy self-seeking LibLabCon artists queuing up to get themselves a ‘safe seat’ on the gravy train. Surely the principle of ‘market forces’ should apply to them as well?

  3. (Party Member) Performance related pay could be the answer. However, they would probably earn nothing or even end up paying us!

  4. These pampered parliamentary parasites should look for a proper job if they are dissatisfied with their largely unearned salary package. Presumably becoming a drain on the public purse was a career move – no one forced them to do it. Quite apart from the fact that they should be leading by example, starting with a substantial cut in pay and perks.

  5. Why should they get pay rises when food banks are opening, pensioners are not able to afford to eat proper foods, families are ending up homeless and cost of living in general is going up? I’m ashamed to be a British citizen (38yrs) and watch these so called MPs “rape” our country dry and destroy everything that our grandparents fought so hard for.

  6. All MPs should be paid the national average wage plus expenses then you would only have people who really cared about the country in power.
