The tragic deaths of six more of our troops in Afghanistan underlines, if that should be necessary, the need to bring this pointless war to an end, Andrew Brons MEP has said.
Writing in a letter addressed to several Yorkshire newspapers this past week, Mr Brons said the war was “started because Al Qaida had fled to Afghanistan and was being given refuge by the Taliban Government after the murderous attack on the Twin Towers.
“Al Qaida has long since left Afghanistan but we and our allies are still there,” Mr Brons continued.
“The Taliban is a most unpleasant and repressive movement and Afghanistan would do well to be rid of them. However, there are many unpleasant and repressive regimes in the world; indeed we trade with many of them. We cannot be the world’s policeman and remove all unpleasant regimes.
“When our young people join the armed forces, they know that we shall ask them to put their lives at risk for us. It is implicit, in our covenant with the armed forces, that we shall ask them to do so only in protection of Britain’s vital interests,” Mr Brons concluded.
* Figures released by a House of Commons report on the war in July 2011 revealed that the Tory-Labour-Lib-Dem party has spent more than £18 billion on war in Afghanistan.
The panel of MPs accused the Ministry of Defence of “hiding the true cost of the war by refusing to disclose millions of unseen expenses.”
The latest deaths bring the number of British servicemen killed in the pointless and most likely illegal war, to 404 since the start of the conflict.
This article hits the nail on the head as to why I will not join the army. I would join the TA from now until the end of my studies (then attempt to get a commission and serve as a regular) if it were not for the causes I would be asked to risk my life for. It is also a double shame as Argentina are posturing for the Falklands again and I would happily serve in a war to repel them in order to keep the inhabitants free.
